Coming from a family, who had to constantly flee from one place to another during World War 2 and leave their homes behind, their belongings robbed and their lives threatened, they were constantly looking for a place to settle down. Growing up in new buildings, welfare projects for social cases, surrounded by the new, I could never quite find trust in it. When I see old abandon houses, they give me a sense of beauty, trust and warmth. Barrenness makes me wonder where did they go and why were they forced to leave. Have people forgotten to return to their homes. So when I travel I am always looking for abandonment, desolation and forgotten places. They are unnoticed by most, but next to the monumental beauty, they give them character and make them shine.

This set of paintings has been painted with acrylic paint on canvas.

Never look,
That’s the secret,
Don’t look
You never look at them directly,
you have a good reason.
Just the way, when you are afraid of dogs,
You walk past them,
You don’t look ,
Hope they will not see you either,
Your fear gets bigger by the unknown
You had a good reason,
you didn’t want to see what was actually there
You didn’t want to feel guilty
Or bad,
Or you felt better without that reality

And then you dared,
What you see is
Different faces in the crowd
Living under the sheltering sky
Individuals, with each their own habits
One-day-old pastries from the bakery,
Basketball games on the radio,
Watching their favorite lady doing tai- chi
Some paint,
Like to read the funnies in the paper,
Some have their favorite park bench,
Sounds almost like you and me
